I grew up on both sides of the border (USA-México) and had never been camping, much less backpacking. In high school, I was motivated to join my school’s Outdoor Leadership Training Club because I wanted to travel around on a low budget more than I was interested in nature. I started exploring the beautiful world of camping/backpacking and was hooked. My Biology teacher knew I was getting into going outside and suggested I apply to Inspiring Girls; I was doubtful about even starting the application. The thought of getting accepted never even went through my mind. But the application itself was very insightful and reflective around who I was, so I filled it out for my own pleasure.
I was extremely surprised I got accepted and a few months later, I met some of the most amazing women in Alaska, and lived some of the best days of my life. It was an experience I still am not able to describe in words. It changed my life and the moment I got back from the expedition, I knew I wanted to help out in any way possible. I want other girls (no matter who because everyone deserves it) to have these types of opportunities. I applied for the assistant coordinator position and I now help the behind-the-scenes. If you have any questions about my experience, feel free to ask to talk to me at any of our organization’s email addresses!
