Hello! My name is Sierra Lloyd, I am a student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, studying ocean chemistry with the Northern Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research project. I was first introduced to the Inspiring Girls* program in 2018, when I was 16, and was accepted into the first ever Girls* On Water expedition in 2019. After that life-changing expedition, I knew I wanted to come back and be a part of the program in a mentoring role, to provide the same sort of mentorship and opportunities and encouragement that my instructors gave to me. I grew up in Alaska doing many outdoor activities– hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and all of that fun stuff– but to do so with a group of girls my age, all of similar interests was like nothing I’d ever done before. I’m still friends with many of the girls from my expedition, who have grown up to be journalists, influencers, scientists, and all around powerful, happy people.
Today, I continue to pursue these outdoor hobbies alongside my schoolwork, as well as indoor hobbies such as ceramics and reading and writing both scientific and creative literature.
