For more than 20 years, I have been working on eternal ice at the Paul Scherrer Institute. As a chemist, I examine trace elements in ice cores that reflect the environmental conditions of the past. For the drilling of these ice cores, I have carried out numerous expeditions to high-alpine glaciers all over the world. I am fascinated by the purity of the ice in which, for example, pollutants can often only be detected in ultrafine traces.
