Growing up my career goals included being able to giggle often and look at trees. To the naked eye, these seem juvenile. However, I now realize these ‘childish dreams’ were rooted in a love for nature, science, and conservation. I recognized our resources were changing and felt that I had no way to help our evolving environment. This desire to increase my scientific knowledge and put that knowledge to use for the health of both humans and the environment is what fuels me every day in my career and quest for continued education. I started my environmental career working for the Texas government helping secure safe drinking water for Texans and moved to Alaska in search of adventure and connection to nature as a sea kayaking guide. Guiding allowed me to blend my love for education with field work and led me to my current role(s). I am currently working for the Chugach Regional Resources Commission, an intertribal consortium dedicated to serving the natural resource interests of the Chugach region. I am also pursuing my MS in Fisheries researching harmful algal toxins in subsistence sea otters and environmental education. This is how I became involved with IGE! IGE is a program I wish I had access to in high school and I believe the combination of science, art, and exploration is the best way for budding scientists to find a fulfilling career in STEM. Science and fieldwork have so many barriers to entry, and I truly believe IGE is a game changer in the STEM world.
